 4.1. ANG MGA MERANAW - ni Victoria. Juarez-Adeva Ang mga Meranaw ay iyong mga Muslim na ninirahan sa Lanao na nasa kapaligiran ng lawa ng Lanao, na siyang pangalawang pinakamalaking lawa sa Pilipinas. Ang orihinal na tawag sa lalawigang ito'y "Ranao" na nangangahulugang lawa o lanaw at ang mga naninirahan ay tinatawag na "Maranao (naninirahan sa may lawa). Ayon kay Casan Alonto (1974) sa kanyang "Perspective on Maranao Society," may mga teorya tungkol sa pinagmulan ng mga Meranaw. Ang isang teorya'y batay sa epiko ng mga Meranaw na Bantugan o Darangan. Sinasabing ang unang mga naninirahan dito sa kapaligiran ng Lanao ay pinangunahan ng isang nagngangalang "Butuanun Kalinan" na buhat sa dakong Silangan na siyang tinatawag na Bombaran (kung saan sumisilang ang araw).
