People who work in the domain of access to cooking energy will know the shocking statistics: 3 billion people around the world, approximately 40% of the world’s population, depend on open fires or inefficient stoves to cook food. Exposure to smoke from fires used for cooking causes an estimated 3.8 million premature deaths each year, with indoor air pollution leading to chronic respiratory and heart diseases as well as injuries such as burns. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by the harmful impacts of cooking with inefficient stoves and open fires in poorly ventilated spaces, as they typically bear the brunt of the immense effort required to procure firewood and prepare meals.
The group, consisting of eleven members, including Abegail Endrina, Aljun Cansa, Carla Capuyan, Denzil Binghay, Jamaica Nasonaso, Jana Llacuna, Jessie Boyles, Jinky Malicia, Remuel Becada, Isabel Dechosa, and Trisha Jabia, reached is consensus. They decided to conduct interviews with four food business owners. The goal is for these four participants to share their experiences, revealing and shedding light on the fuel operation of their business. Through those interviews, the group aims to identify facts and experiences that need attention, ultimately crafting and promoting a better innovative solution. These interviews will serve as the foundation for their analysis and problem-solving endeavors.
Paper charcoals are made by soaking waste paper overnight and forming it into fist-sized balls which are left to dry in the sun. Paper charcoal serves as a good alternative fuel for cooking. Encouraging the use of paper charcoal as a cooking alternative is a good practice. Waste papers that would otherwise end up in landfills are given new use as a cooking medium. This will also help reduce dependence on forest wood for cooking. Since this is made out of used paper materials, this is inexpensive and can be done by every household anytime. It does not produce soot like ordinary charcoals.

product, considering both uniqueness and affordability, significantly
influences the willingness of customers at grilled and barbecue stations to try/purchase
it.
Hypothesis 2: The overall willingness of customers at
grilled and barbecue stations to try/purchase our paper fuel product is
significantly higher than the neutral response (e.g., a rating of 5 on a 1-10
scale).
OPTIONS
1. Visual Presentation to Assess
Perceived Value

utilize visuals like images, videos, science articles, and a prototype of the
product to enhance perceived value. Respondents then rate the product's appeal,
considering these visual elements.
2. Testimonials and Social
Proof
- leverage online testimonials and proof of performance to build credibility. Respondents rate their trust in the product based on these testimonials, influencing their willingness to try/purchase.
3. Direct Rating Scale
-
employ a direct rating scale, prompting respondents to provide a numerical
rating (1-10) for their willingness to try/purchase the paper fuel. This
straightforward approach simplifies the assessment.
4. Scenario-Based Rating
- introduces a scenario where respondents must choose between your paper fuel
and traditional charcoal, then rate their likelihood of selecting your product.
Follow-up questions explore decision factors.
TEAM DECISION
To examine Hypothesis 1, where the perceived value of our paper fuel
significantly influenced customer willingness to try/purchase, we employed Option 1, a Visual Presentation. By
showcasing images, videos, science articles, and a prototype of our paper fuel,
we aimed to visually communicate its uniqueness and affordability. This
approach enabled respondents to make informed assessments, enhancing their understanding
of our paper fuel's value and potentially influencing their purchase
intentions.
For Hypothesis
2, testing if overall willingness to try/purchase our paper fuel was
significantly higher than a neutral response, we used Option 3, the Direct Rating Scale. By employing a simple 1-10
rating system, respondents expressed their immediate willingness to engage with
our paper fuel. Notably, the majority of the rating scores given were higher
than 5, the neutral point, suggesting a positive inclination towards our
product and supporting our hypothesis.
